He counts the number of the stars;
He calls them all by name.
The Number 72
Every number in the Bible has a special significance and normally it will follow the same pattern no matter which book it's in or how many times it's been used. I decided to pick one number and do a little study on it for fun. Here you go.....
I don't believe in coincidence. The languages of the Holy Bible are Hebrew and
Greek. The most prevalent language in history for the spread of the Gospel is
English (no doubt about that).
Hebrew 22 letters
Greek 24 characters
English 26 characters.
That to me is more than coincidence. While reflecting one day, it dawned on me that they equal 72....
As Christ's life and ministry was a walking parable, I believe the following is speaking of the 72 characters of the three major languages by which the good news has been sent forth:
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. Luke 10:1
Later it says:
The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."
As a sort of confirmation of this we have the final chapter of Mark:
He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well." Mark 16:15-18
Several other occasions concerning this number: We have 70 elders chosen in Numbers 11:14-17 to assist Moses. These 70, plus Aaron and Moses equal 72 - the 72 who spoke on God's behalf to the people. Also there were 72 ornaments on the Menorah in the Tabernacle - a symbol of Light- and the oil in it, the Holy Spirit. Also, there were said to be 72 separate pieces of the veil in the Temple which separated the Holy place from the Most Holy Place. All these speak of the transmission of God's message.
Additionally, the Greek Old Testament, the Septuagint was said to have been translated by 72 Hebrew Scholors (six from each tribe) in 72 days....again a transmission of God's message. To read the account, click here.
Something else, pertinent in our time - the priestly garments are being remade for Temple service. The garment of the High Priest has brass bells and pomogrants woven into its hem. Interestingly, they have decided that 72 of each, alternating around the hem will be used... Inspired? I think so.
